SCC students deliver $226K in refunds through VITA

This tax season marked Saratoga Central Catholic’s first year participating in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, led by Business Teacher Mr. George Hannah.

SCC is one of approximately 120 schools nationwide to offer this program. Throughout the school year, juniors and seniors in our business courses built a foundation in tax preparation while working toward IRS certification, with several students also completing advanced certification. After successfully passing their exams, more than 20 students participated in preparing free tax returns during scheduled sessions for members of the local community.

In addition to reinforcing classroom learning, students gained valuable experience working directly with clients, strengthening communication skills, and developing a deeper understanding of the tax preparation process.

The impact of this year’s VITA Program:

  • $310,710 in total economic impact
  • $226,995 in total refunds returned to the community
  • 145 total clients served
  • $11,888 largest single refund
  • 790 total student volunteer hours
  • $51,375 in total client savings

Congratulations, Saints, on an incredible tax season, and thank you for your service to our community!
